For the writing of “Once Upon a Time in the West”, Sergio Leone desired to work with young cinephiles. He picked the directors-to-be Dario Argento and Bernardo Bertolucci. Their passionate knowledge of the great American westerns prompted them to sprinkle the script with quotations. A selection.
