Man with a Movie Camera

Who says learning can’t be fun? For the looks of it, Tobie T. is one student who certainly did have a lot of fun when making this video essay for a film studies class. In it, the editing techniques of Dziga Vertov’s seminal Man with a Movie Camera (1929) are succinctly explained.

 

With its brisk pace and an abundant dose of visual inventiveness, this short video essay not only summarizes Vertov’s style, but mimics it as well. Form follows content. Tobie T. even reverse engineers one of Vertov’s scenes, recreating it with modern means but vintage looks. This video essay is a form of learning through practice, of thinking out loud in images and sound effects.
