For as long as there have been stories about people, there have been stories about animal headed people. But, most recently, Lisa Hanawalt’s characters have carved a new space in the public consciousness for animal people – from her work as production designer on the Netflix series BoJack Horseman, and as the creator of Tuca and Bertie as well as independent comics – and I think it’s these characters, more than any others, that are most able to both distance us and bring us closer to being human.
